I’m going to start by making a very simple, but clear distinction: You are not the voice inside your head. You are not your subconscious. And you have the choice whether or not to listen to it.
When starting a business, there are often a slew of things you want to figure out right away: business plan, pricing structure, website, products and/or services, etc. And generally, this are all things that people can figure out on their own, whether they have a background in business and marketing or not.
But the one area that I see people get stuck time and time again is in acquiring clients and customers. Where do I advertise? Do I advertise? What social media platforms should I use? How do I promote myself? Where should I market?
I get asked pretty often how someone who is interested in personal development should get started. What comes first? How do they get involved? Well, I once heard an analogy for personal development that I absolutely love: Think of your mindset like a muscle. It’s either growing larger or smaller depending on whether or not you’re working it. So the way to get started is to simply start working that muscle.
Usually when I talk to someone who has already gotten into the personal development game, they can pinpoint that one moment when it all began. Usually it ties back to a book they read, a podcast they listened to, or someone they heard speak. Sometimes it’s a simple moment of deciding “I’m done with the way my life is going right now” and they seek it out themselves. Sometimes it happens unexpectedly. But it usually always starts with some sort of resource.
The good news is that personal development resources can be found all over the place! You can read a blog, listen to a podcast, follow someone on social media, attend a conference or workshop, find a book, use a workbook, or reach out to a life coach. Really, it doesn’t matter how you get started, just that you do. Working that mindset muscle and taking control of your own life are the first steps to creating the world you want to live in.

We’ve all heard the scary stories. A fellow entrepreneur or friend in the biz signed up to work with a coach (life, health, business, you-name-it) and were totally sold … only to find out the perceived value had no results to back it up.
So how can you tell before you sign the contract and send your money along? How can you be sure that the person you’re working with is the real deal? Here are a few things to look out for:

If there was one thing our book club decided on while reading Profit First by Mike Michalowicz, it’s that this book should be marketed as a how-to for business finance more than a way to make profit. Don’t get me wrong, Michalowicz does guarantee you’ll make profit — which he does. But the true benefit of the book is how to set yourself up for financial success from the get to.
I’ll be the first to say it: Not everyone should hire a life coach. Sure, it may seem counterproductive for me to be discouraging people from working with one, but it actually isn’t. If you’re not in a place where you should see a coach, it would be a waste of my time (and your money!) to work with me.
There are a lot of amazing things that life coaches can do to help people. Be their sounding board, someone to hold them accountable, their kick-in-the-pants, a mentor, a friend, someone who has the knowledge and resources to help you achieve your goals…the list goes on.
But there are definitely those who shouldn’t work with a coach, at least not in this moment.
