I have been hearing story after story of small business owners going against their gut to follow advice given to them from coaches or other entrepreneurs -- advice that doesn't align with who they are. And it's frustrating! As a life coach, I obviously want my clients to succeed. But for me, the way they succeed is equally important.
I am a life coach because I have an inherent desire to help others feel the most confident they can possibly feel. To help them find value in themselves, for themselves. Passing out blanket advice to each client I see is never going to achieve this goal for me, and it won't help them achieve their goals either. This is why I get so exasperated when I hear that another brilliant, wonderful entrepreneur has fallen in with a fake coach. Their money, their time, their resources are devoted to a partnership that isn't in their best interests.
A good coach caters their time spent to the person they're spending it with. I dig deep into your personal beliefs, your fears, your strengths, your values. I work with you to gain success in a way that feels right to you, and I help you do it yourself. There's a big difference between me simply giving you a generic formula and then you executing it, and a process that is completely revolved around you, your business, and your values.
So if you're in a partnership with a colleague or coach that feels simply wrong to you, don't continue doing it because you feel like it's "what you're supposed to do." Trust that you know what's best for your business. Trust your gut. Trust yourself. Don't be afraid to speak up when something doesn't sound right to you. Only you have the power over your business, and only you know best!
