Book Review: The Fire Starter Sessions

master mindset entrepreneur book club

It’s time to say something absolutely radical: You should run your business (and your life) based off your feelings. Crazy concept, I know!

From childhood onward, we’re taught that our future is based off logical, rational decisions. Think about how often it’s drilled into us: Choosing to go into an area of study at age eighteen simply because those were the classes we did well in during high school. Accepting a job because it’s close to what we studied, or because we’re qualified in it (who cares if we “like it”).

The Fire Starter Sessions by Danielle LaPorte breaks that all down. Instead of focusing on building a life that we think is what we’re supposed to be doing, it urges us to follow our inner truth to decide what direction to move forward in — both in our personal and professional lives. LaPorte moves through issues such as fear, rejection, marketing, hard work, money, and criticism to help us build a future that we feel excited for.

Through a combination of anecdotes, feeling-based thinking, and self-reflective exercises, The Fire Starter Sessions not only argues that we should be living our lives based off our core desired feelings, but it gives us the steps to get there.

Overall, LaPorte argues that “The way of the creative is to win others’ hearts through following the truth within ourselves.” It forces you to ask yourself: How do I want to feel? And that can often be a scary question! Instead of focusing on what we feel obligated to do, it offers a second option, one where passion rules over duty. One where we can’t help but expose our true selves, our vulnerabilities, in order to show the world what we really care about.

So for anyone out there toying with the idea of switching careers, leaving a relationship, or simply leading a life where you feel strengthened by your day to day life, The Fire Starter Sesssions is a uniquely qualified book to get you there.
